Water and Skin Care
February 8, 2010

Water is used for cleansing and remove large amount of impurity with which skin suffer daily.

To have truly healthy skin, you must be certain that it is hydrated, meaning that the cells must have enough water to remain healthy and full size. Without hydration, cells shrivel, and the skin tone and appearance suffer.

Water and skin care are almost an oxymoron. This is because water is also considered a “drying agent” when used on the surface layer of the skin. Anyone who has their hands in water for long periods of time on a regular basis will tell you that they suffer from dry and cracked hands all the time. Water and skin care don’t seem to mix at all! People who use a lot of water on their skins, especially in winter, when indoor conditions are dry anyway, will find that they have to use many more moisturizing products and treat their skin far more often to avoid the negative affects.

The skin is made up of three layers, each playing an important part in total body health. The epidermis, or the outer layer, is the skin you actually see. It can be dry looking if not cared for, but it is also important to remember that most of the skin you see is composed of cells which are already dead. Right under the skin you see are the new skin cells which replace the dead ones as they fall off. (It is estimated that we lose about 9 pounds of dead skin in a year.). Your old dead cells will dry and fall off even faster if lots of water is used on them. So, how can water and skin care be related? Because under that layer of epidermis you see is that other layer of skin cells which are alive. They are healthy because blood is constantly delivering nutrients and, of course, water. These cells need water to maintain their health and appearance.

The only way your body gets water is through your drinking it. When you continually nourish your body with water throughout the day, your blood cells carry this water to all parts of your body, hydrating all cells and helping them maintain their correct size and shape. This is especially important for skin, as it is the largest organ of your body. Without proper hydration, skin ages faster, is more susceptible to diseases, irritants, and unsightly conditions, and creates a generally unhealthy look.

The additional reason for the close relationships between water and skin care lies in the dermis layer of the skin. This is a large thick layer of cells directly below the epidermis, full of tiny blood vessels (which need and carry water) and holds all of your oil glands. Oil glands are always producing oil (called sebum) and if there is nothing to help dissolve some of this oil, or pores are not appropriately open, the oil can sit, thicken and cause blemishes. Water assists the dermis in the performance of all of its functions.

Most people wash their skin with water (adding soap of course). The cleansing action of water is most helpful in eliminating the vast amount of impurities with which the skin is bombarded daily. Even if soap or other cleansing agent is unavailable, washing with plain water will cleanse the skin a great deal.
