Sweat and the Skin
September 2, 2010

Sweating is essential that helps in keeping body cool by decreasing the heat created inside the body and help the body in fighting against the harmful dieases and keep body fitness level high.

Skin is the largest organ of a human body. It is therefore essential in many ways and one has to take proper care of it. Skin acts as a physical barrier that prevents the entry of harmful micro-organisms and substances into the body. It assists the body tissues against internal injuries. It is also engaged in controlling the loss of fluids from the body which are considered as life-sustaining materials. These fluids are helpful in throttling body temperature through sweating or perspiration. Perspiration protects the skin from the ultraviolet rays that are the damaging sun rays.

Skin is composed of two types of sweat glands, eccrine and apocrine glands. Eccrine glands are opened directly onto the skin surface and discharge fluid by evaporation which helps in regulating temperature of the body. The fluid secreted by eccrine glands comprises of ninety-nine percent of water and the remaining one percent contains unnecessary waste products. The eliminated waste products chiefly include minerals like zinc, copper, phosphorus, uric acid, ammonia, sodium, potassium and calcium. On the other hand apocrine glands are found only in the specific regions of the body such as arm-pits, genital areas and scalp. They secrete waste products in the form of fatty sweat that contains carbohydrates and proteins. This type of sweat on the skin surface usually allows it bacterial breakdown which results in repulsive body odour.

Sweat glands found beneath the skin produce sweat that helps in keeping the body cool. The amount of sweat increases with warmer temperature conditions, stress and nervousness. Certain drugs, foods, or medical states can also alter a person’s specific body odour. It is proved that the healthier a person is, less likely they are to give off unfavourable body scent. Sweating is essential factor in maintaining a good looking, and healthy skin. It not only regulates body temperature, but also helps it to get rid of the waste products by discharging them via this mechanism. Removal of body wastages helps in keeping the skin clean, smooth and pliant. Human body internally sieves through and gets rid of toxic materials by itself on daily basis. Sweating once a day further helps the body in detoxifying the harmful matter.

A body at rigorous work produces heat faster than it is at rest. Obviously, more arduous an activity is, more is the heat created. It is a critical point that this heat has to be removed from body to the outside environment efficiently and quickly so that there is no disturbance of the internal functions of the body. The extra heat can fairly disturbs the fine balance of internal functions. So its removal is mandatory for the normal functioning of the body. Sweating indicates a high fitness level as poor physical conditions lead in difficulty to handle the increased heat conditions of the body. Therefore you have to take care of your sweating pattern to maintain a healthy and clean skin. It is the best employed mechanism of the skin that protects its shine and preserves its glow.
