Skin Fresheners, Toners, and Astringents July 20, 2008Skin fresheners toners and astringents are used after washing the skin to help close pores and are used dependent upon type of skin and skin conditions.
Washing one’s face, particularly by adolescence should include the following regimen:
Water and a mild soap to clean the surface area. Usually hot water splashed on the face will open pores, and the cleansing agent will actually get down into the pores better. If you have sensitive skin, a mild soap should be used. For less sensitive skin which might also be prone to acne and blemishes, you will want to use a stronger cleanser.
The second step involves the application of skin fresheners, toners and astringents. These products provide a variety of skin care and are used dependent upon the type of skin and skin conditions you have. Fresheners are the mildest form of after-washing treatment and are used to help close pores and give a nice “finished” appearance. Skin toners are astringents that are stronger than fresheners, and work to more greatly reduce pores. Astringents are the strongest after-wash products, for people who have quite large pores and need deep cleaning and tightening that other products will not provide.
The third step in the process is moisturizing. Soap and water, as well as most skin fresheners, toners and astringents, are also drying agents, so it is important to moisturize the skin with a good product after the routine of drying things out.
Which of these skin fresheners, toners and astringents to use will depend upon your skin type? If you normally have very dry skin, you do not want to use those which will increase the dryness severely. If, on the other hand, you have oily skin, the goal is to reduce the oil, and the stronger products are normally recommended. The sensitivity of your skin must also be taken into account, because some of the stronger products, or any products with dyes and fragrances, can create other skin problems for you.
Choosing the correct skin fresheners, toners, and astringents is a trial-and-error procedure. You may want to begin with the milder forms and see if you are pleased with the results. Continue up the ladder after that, increasing the strength of the product you use until you get the results you want.
Over-the-counter fresheners, toners and astringents are not the final solution for many people. Adolescents who suffer acne to the point that it affects their self-image and lifestyle, adults who suffer from adult acne or large pores, and seniors who suffer a variety of skin conditions may want to consult a dermatologist for prescriptive medications which are suited to their specific conditions. Research has come a long way in recent years, and there are many new products available to dermatologists who can analyze your skin type, diagnose conditions, and prescribe fresheners, toners and astringents that will achieve the best results. In many instances, health insurance will cover visits to a dermatologist, and most prescriptions and treatments he/she gives.
The ultimate cure for some severe cases of enlarged pores, acne scarring, and wrinkles is plastic surgery. There are a variety of outpatient and inpatient surgical procedures available, but they are pricey and not covered by health insurance. Make sure your pockets are deep if you choose them, and be certain to consult at least to physicians before deciding on a specific procedure.
