Care for Shea Butter Skin September 8, 2008Shea butter skin care is used in treatment for scars, acts as anti-oxidant, moisturizers and protection from the sun.
Shea butter comes from the nut of the Shea tree, commonly found in Africa. It has been used for a variety of medical treatments for centuries, most notably in ancient Egypt but in other parts of Africa as well. Perhaps the most common use of Shea butter skin care was as a protection against sun and wind on the plains of this continent.
Throughout history, shea butter has been used as an anti-inflammatory, specifically for sore and inflamed joints, tendons, and muscles. In societies which practiced circumcision, it was used as a soothing healing ingredient. Like cocoa butter, shea butter is also used extensively in the treatment of scars and in the prevention of scarring from wounds and pregnancy.
Shea butter skin care has evolved now into many uses, and can be found in a whole host of cosmetics and skin and hair care products. Generally, it is not used in its pure form but is added to skin fresheners, toners, moisturizers, make-ups, lipsticks, etc. It does have efficacy for certain conditions when used in its pure form, however.
Below are just a few of the shea butter skin care uses:
As a treatment for scars, shea butter is touted by some as being better than the cocoa butter typically used for this purpose. It is also recommended for the prevention of stretch marks during pregnancy.
Small amounts of shea butter massaged into the face provide necessary moisture, and have been shown to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, at least the appearance of them. It should be noted that if one begins a regimen of shea butter treatment for aging skin, it should be continued – it is not a cure but a treatment. Many anti-aging products on the market today contain shea butter, the exact amount varying quite a bit. To compare amounts of shea butter in creams and lotions, see how far down it is on the list of ingredients. If it is within the top 4 ingredients, you have a good amount.
Shea butter skin care includes protection from the sun. However, it is not meant to replace sunblocks and should not be used as such.
Shea butter is considered to be an anti-oxidant, so shea butter skin care can help protect your exposed skin from the oxidants it faces every day in the form of pollution.
Shea butter has a good absorption rate when it meets up with the heat from you body. It can be used in massage therapy treatments without that greasy feel that other oils leave. Shea seems to be absorbed through the pores of the skin more easily and quickly. Coupled with its moisturizing and anti-again properties, shea butter skin care are added to the benefits of the massage itself.
Shea butter is not as well known as some of the other natural skin care products. This should not prevent you from exploring the possibilities, however, as many people have achieved great results through the use of shea butter skin care for a variety of conditions.
