Care for Sensitive Skin
September 2, 2010

Various causes of sensitive skin are stress, seasonal changes, environmental factors, dyes and fragrances and allergic reaction.

Sensitive skin can be defined as any skin on the body that reacts adversely to washing, skin care products, or to environmental factors. People who suffer from sensitive skin will usually have some physical skin characteristics which are irritating at best and downright embarrassing at worst, especially if the condition is visible to others.

Sufferers of this condition are always looking for sensitive skin care products or help from a professional. Any attempt to reduce the appearance of sensitive skin will require an investigation of the causes of the sensitivity and then some research relative to what products/help is available to address the specific cause.

Among the causes of sensitive skin are the following:

Allergic Reactions. Many people are born or develop allergies to a variety of foods, materials, animals, and plants. Allergic reactions can be severe, but, for the most part, there will be some type of skin reaction – hives, rashes, redness, itching or burning, eczema, etc. Types of sensitive skin care for these conditions usually include some type of hydrocortisone cream, an anti-inflammatory product which reduces the external symptoms. Benedryl, an antihistamine, may also be taken internally for relief. The only prevention for these types of skin conditions is to avoid the allergen.

Dyes and Fragrances: Most skin products contain one or more dyes or fragrances. Sometimes, human skin can react against these with redness or itching. If you find this to be true for you, check the ingredients carefully before you purchase soaps, liquid cleansers, skin toners/refiners, moisturizers, etc. Purchase only those items that have no dyes or fragrances. If the condition goes away, you have solved your sensitive skin care problem.

Environmental Factors: It is not only the UV rays from sunlight that play havoc with skin. Pollution, smoke, and a host of other airborne substances can affect skin in very negative ways. Skin can become dry, chapped, red, rashy and really quite unattractive from these causes. In this case, your sensitive skin care will require some strong sun block use, as well, as newer “sealers” which promise to protect your skins from the ravages of air pollution.

Seasonal Changes: Going from the humidity of spring and summer to the dryness of fall and winter can also wreak havoc on sensitive skin. As your home’s interior dries out with furnace use, your skin may become dry, chapped, or may develop dry scaly patches. The care in this instance is lots of moisturizing, and may include some super-moisturizers used primarily for eczema-like conditions. If these conditions persist, it would not hurt to visit a dermatologist and get a prescription medication for this time of the year.

Stress: Stress takes its toll on your entire body, and your skin is no exception. Acne, redness, itching, burning, and eczema can result from anxiety, worry, or the daily stress of too active a lifestyle. Sensitive skin care in this instance involves treating the symptoms, obviously, but treating the causes as well. Finding a short period of time to meditate or get your mind quiet each day will do wonders for your ability to withstand the stress, and your skin will thank you too!

There are a wide variety of products available for sensitive skin care. You may need to do your own trial-and-error testing in order to find what works for the specific conditions you experience, but with patience and time, you will find success.
