Body lipid fights against psoriasis
July 20, 2008

Psoriasis is caused due to cell growth to great extend and it is necessary to maintain proper functioning of body by doing physical workouts.

Psoriasis is a kind of skin disease due to which there happens to be red scaly patches on the skin. The body has its own mechanisms that help it in maintaining its growth and differentiation of the cells. The body holds a secret that manages growth of normal skin cell. In psoriasis the skin cell growth crosses the normal limit and become over zealous. To sustain a healthy and normal functioning of the body it is important to manage all internal body mechanisms well.

Phosphatidylglycerol is a normal body fat or lipid which is considered as signal cells to have their normalize maturation and growth. Even when this body lipid is applied to skin cells it results in its normalization ability or differentiation. A research was published online in The Journal of Investigative Dermatology regarding natural body lipids which suggests that it keeps together the signalling pathway that stimulates skin cells to stop multiplying. It thus incites the differentiation of the skin cells.

The research most importantly shows that bypassing the pathway results in dysfunctional in disease psoriasis. It then gives the signal itself and restores the normal differentiation of skin cells or keratinocytes. Glycerol is a precursor of phosphatidylglycerol which is also available commercially. It is used in many skin care products and this is because of its high efficacy in retaining skin moisture, so that the skin looks and feels better. It also has an additional function in the skin as a precursor for an important lipid signal. Glycerol is a natural occurring precursor for fat, sugars, phospholipids, and various metabolic pathways in of the body. The level of glycerol goes up whenever a person exercises because they are actually using fats as fuel.

The research has shown that the channel aquaporin-3 serves to deliver glycerol to phospholipase D that then results in the skin cell differentiation signal, called phosphatidylglycerol. It serves as a signal that operates the normal functioning of keratinocyte differentiation. Without it there are probabilities to get abnormal demarcation of skin cells that result in various skin diseases like dermatitises, non-melanoma skin cancer, and psoriasis. Due to the lack of signal there are several problems in normal cell functions like the cells start proliferating much and they don’t differentiate properly. In psoriasis the connection between aquaporin-3 and phospholipase D failed so that there is no further production of phosphatidylglycerol.

Phosphatidylglycerol is thought to inhibit the growth of fast growing skin cells and also reckons to increase growth in slow-growing cells. Without phosphatidylglycerol, skin cells can proliferate above normal limits or too much and differentiate improperly. Before the cells reach the outer layer that we can actually see which is called the cornified layer, they discharge out lipids which they synthesized to produce the water permeability barrier. But when they died they leave behind hard shells that give a skin its elasticity and mechanical strength. Therefore when you get older, you don’t turn it well and despite continual cell turnover your old skin starts looking old.
