Psoriasis Treatment
September 2, 2010

Psoriasis is a condition usually seen as patches of scaly skin, sometime silver in color.

It is estimated that between 4.5 and 7 million people in the U.S. along have psoriasis. To the individual uneducated about it, psoriasis seems to be just a skin condition, perhaps like eczema or hives. It is really quite different, however, even though psoriasis treatment is usually performed by a dermatologist.

Psoriasis is a condition usually seen as patches of scaly skin, sometime silver in color. This is the most common type, although there are great varieties of this condition and therefore great variety in psoriasis treatment. A medical professional will usually have to diagnose the specific type an individual has before prescribing any type of treatment and medication.

The cause of psoriasis was a mystery until modern medicine was able to discern that it really is a problem with the immune system. Something goes awry, and the skin overproduces, leaving too much skin on some areas of the body. Patches of psoriasis usually occur on the elbows and knees, but can also appear anywhere on the body. It is not important to note that psoriasis, though unsightly, is certainly not contagious nor is it life-threatening. The key is to determine what type of psoriasis you have and to start a psoriasis treatment plan which will keep the condition under control (it cannot be cured as of this date).

Like any other skin condition, psoriasis ranges from mild to severe, can begin as early as aged 10, and there is certainly some hereditary propensity to get it. Once it is diagnosed, however, psoriasis treatment should begin at once, so that the sufferer gets relief as quickly as possible.

There is a lot of variation of treatment because there are so many types of psoriasis and so many levels of severity. As well as, what works with one will not work with another. So, a trial-and-error procedure is usually the best method. Usually, dermatologists will begin with the least toxic topical ointments and creams, applied to the affected areas. If these topical do not prove effective psoriasis treatment, then the next step is usually phototherapy. This involves shooting UV rays at the affected areas; they then flake off to reveal new normal skin underneath. If phototherapy does not prove effective, there are internal medications (pills) which will work more on fooling the immune system to stop the increased production of skin. Sometimes, internal psoriasis treatment will include injections.

It is important to remember as well, that any form of psoriasis can become resistant to a specific therapy, so that treatments may have to change a lot. Psoriasis is not curable at this point, so suffers will have to continue the trial-and-error procedure to maintain relief and minimize the outbreaks.

Bacterial infections sometimes cause outbreaks. In this instance, psoriasis treatment involves the use of antibiotics as well as the other treatments being used for the symptoms. As well, moving to a different climate may be a partial answer for severe sufferers.

There are other less well-known psoriasis treatments, to include spas with specific fish that eat the scaly patches (actually, people report great relief from these), salt water bathing, Epsom salts, Neem oil (used primarily in India), sulphur, and even Yoga and other meditative procedures. The point is, each sufferer may need to find what works best for him/her, and it may be a combination of medical and natural procedures.
