Remedies for Freckles September 2, 2010The freckles that appear as small reddish or reddish-brown spots, more prevalent in the summer and less in the winter.
Freckles are often considered really cute on the little girl or boy adorned with them. As little girls and boys grow up, however, they often feel that these little spots are a deterrent to their good looks and begin to look for successful remedies for freckles.
Freckles are actually caused by a variant in a gene, and, as such, are considered hereditary for the most part. These are the freckles that appear as small reddish or reddish-brown spots, more prevalent in the summer and less in the winter. The other kind of freckle that can appear is a larger spot of darker color which does not go away in the winter. Neither form of freckle is in any way a health risk, no matter how much you may hate them.
Certain types of skin and hair types seem to have the gene variant more than others. Fair skinned people and those with red hair are much more prone to have freckles and to experience a huge increase in the condition with sun exposure. There is also evidence that hormone fluctuations can cause an increase in freckles. This is because hormones can trigger greater production of melanin in the skin. Melanin is the substance that gives skin its color, and freckles are really just spots where there is more melanin. But remember, the propensity to get freckles in the first place is genetic, and that can’t be changed.
So, what are the remedies for freckles? A person who is bothered by them can try several things:
First and foremost, a strong sunblock should be used at all times, not just in the summer. UV rays are the single most important factor in the production of freckles. Any remedy for freckles, then, must begin with this, no matter what else you do.
There are a number of skin bleaching products available over-the-counter. These are used for freckles, age spots, etc. and some can provide good temporary de-escalation of pigmentation. This remedy for freckles, however, is temporary, and the product must be used consistently to achieve continued results.
There are a variety of home remedies for freckles with various levels of success. Lemon juice is often touted as a good way to fade freckles, when applied directly onto the spots. Other home remedies include horseradish juice, oatmeal, castor oil, and Vitamin E oil. All of these substances are to be rubbed on to the affected areas, not taken internally.
Medical Solutions. Remedies for freckles can also be sought from a dermatologist. This can be expensive because most health insurance plans consider these procedures to be cosmetic, not a necessary medical treatment. So, be prepared to bear the cost if you go this route. Basically, the freckles are either frozen or lasered. In either case, the spot of melanin is “fried” in some way, the treated area dries up and falls off after a few days. This is a highly successful treatment for existent freckles, but then the sufferer must take solid and consistent prevention methods to avoid getting new freckles – easier said than done!
