Care for Black Skin

September 2, 2010

Uneven skin tone for blacks is mainly due to burns, scars and hyper-pigmentation.

Skin care for the African-American individual is unique. In many respects, Blacks are lucky because they do not fact the wrinkling that lighter-skinned races do. In general, blacks age more slowly and less noticeably than others, and they maintain a youthful appearance far into senior citizenship

Black skin care attacks other challenges that are specific to the African-American population. One big challenge can be uneven skin tone. Skin color is determined by the amount of melanin in the body, the skin pigment that determines color. Caucasians have the least melanin, and Blacks have the most. Other races have varying amounts, and this can be visibly observed. Uneven skin tone for Blacks is the result of several factors:

Burns can cause uneven skin tone. Sometimes a burn will reduce the pigmentation so that the burned area is quite visible.

Scars can cause uneven skin tone. African-American skin has less elasticity than Caucasian skin, so wounds tend to produce scars that are “tight” rather than malleable. Black skin care products for wounds and burns need to address this need.

Hyper-pigmentation is the condition where darker spots pop up as the result of wounds or even simple daily acts, such as shaving.

When choosing, African-American should always look for black skin care products specifically designed for them. Some basic ingredients are important, so reading the labels to be certain that the product contains them will be important.

One of the key ingredients for black skin care is tretinoin, a byproduct of Vitamin A, used for both bone and skin health. It functions as a general regulator for skin, in that it treats roughness, over-pigmentation, acne and even wrinkles. Look for skin care products that have high levels of tretinoin. The way to check the levels is to see how far down on the ingredient list, the substance is. The farther down on the list, the smaller amount is contained. Likewise the higher up on the list more of the ingredient in the product. Be certain as well that there are some oils in the product. Vitamin A and its by-products can be somewhat drying to the skin, so it is important that essential moisture is replaced as well. Many African-Americans take Vitamin A as a dietary supplement for its skin care benefits.

Any discussion of Black skin care would not be complete without a little more talk of moisturizing. It is easy to tell when your skin is too dry. It may not feel rough and scaly to the touch, but you may begin to see an “ashy” tone. This means that your skin is not hydrated sufficiently. To counter this, you need to increase your daily intake of water and increase the amount of oil and moisturizer applications to your skin. This is particularly true in the winter and if you live in an essentially dry climate. Dry skin can cause a general lack of radiance and glow, and no one wants that.

Black skin care is unique, just as is skin care for every race. To know what will produce the healthiest looking skin and to develop a regimen of treatment using the products that work, will result in lovely skin for well into your senior years.
