Acne is quite common in teenagers. But it is not like occasional pimples which come and go shortly. Adolescent children when they get affected with acne try their level best at home level by not eating chocolates, sweets or fried stuff like French fries and so on. They apply latest creams, gels and find no effect. They even change their hair style by covering the side of the face where acne is more spread. Due to acne their self confidence and self esteem comes down. They get psychologically affected as they are teased by their peer groups. But acne can come to any age group varying from late teens till forty years of age.
One of the treatments of acne is Accutane which is the trade name and it comes in the drug name Isotretinoin. Accutane is the member of a class of drugs called retinoids or Vitamin A analog and the manufacturer is Hoffmann- La Roche of Nutley. This medicine is approved by the FDA and more than 12 million people are going for this treatment in United States and world- wide. Accutane balances the oil and changes the composition of oil and does not allow the pores to clog up. Accutane also prevents the excess of Keratin and so that the comedones are not readily formed.
The treatment of Accutane has severe side effects like chances of miscarriage and severe birth defects. It even affects the other organs like the liver, intestines, eyes, ears, and skeletal system. The other side effect of Accutane is lip inflammation and drying of skin including peeling on the eye lids, dry nasal passages and mucous membranes. The patients feel very thirsty throughout the day. Accutane also causes other psychiatric problems like depression and tendency of committing suicide. Since Accutane is a high-risk drug it is normally not prescribed for normal acne but it is reserved for the ‘severe recalcitrant nodular acne’. The drug should be used under the advice of the doctor. The capsule should be consumed with fat containing food or whole milk so that the medication is fully absorbed in the skin and gets good effect. The tablet should not be chewed or sucked but to be taken with a full glass of water. The women who are in the child bearing age group should use 100% guaranteed contraception form one month before and after the use of Accutane. The treatment takes and average of 4 to 6 months. The dosage varies from 0.5 mg to 1 mg per kg of your body weight and the whole treatment course maximum should not be less than 120mg per kg of your body weight.
Doctors give only one month medicine of Accutane and then the patients should come for check up like urine, or blood pregnancy testing, contraceptive counseling each month as most of the patients are in the child bearing group of 15 years to 40 years.
