Rosacea is a skin disease which causes redness in the face which is usually mistaken for a case of acne. This is because its characteristics of small, red and pus filled bumps resemble acne. This is why rosacea is often called adult acne or acne rosacea. Rosacea is a skin condition that usually affects people with fair skin between the ages of 30 and 60.
Rosacea is more common in women than men. However, men tend to develop stronger signs of the disorder when suffering from it. Rosacea is not a life threatening disease, but tends to affect your appearance and thus lowers your self esteem. If left untreated, you find that rosacea becomes progressively worse where in some people, it even becomes cyclic and flares up for weeks and months where the signs and symptoms lessen after some time.
It is not easy to diagnose the early symptoms of rosacea as it is not recognized immediately. Rosacea develops gradually over a period of years. People suffering from rosacea tend to blush easily. This is why a reddened facial skin is not considered unusual till it becomes chronic and other symptoms of rosacea become prominent.
It is not that the symptoms of rosacea are always apparent. They tend to come and go repeatedly at intervals. And since it has similar symptoms to other skin conditions, rosacea is usually confused with other skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, acne and seborrheic dermatitis.
The first few symptoms of rosacea include frequent blushing in the face of the patient. People suffering from rosacea have a persistent facial redness or flushing that tends to resemble sunburn. This is why regular swimmers and beach people are diagnosed with rosacea only when its symptoms increase tremendously.
Other symptoms of rosacea include the tiny, widened and dilated blood vessels on the face. These blood vessels are usually referred to as spider veins which lie spread over the face. Some people tend to experience a warm and burning sensation on the facial skin when suffering from rosacea. Red bumps or pimples on the face with dry, watery and irritated eyes are also symptoms of rosacea.
The other facial symptoms of rosacea include blisters, pustules and papules on the nose, chin, forehead and cheeks along with plaques of raised red patches. Some people tend to develop rough, scaly and dry skin on the face with some skin thickening and swelling.
Rosacea is a skin disease that appears in phases. First it may look like the person has a tendency of flushing or blushing easily. This flushing and blushing then develops into a persistent redness that is more prominent in the middle of the face, especially the nose. This blushing is actually due to the dilation of blood vessels found near the surface of the skin. This phase of rosacea is often referred to as pre-rosacea.
With the worsening of the symptoms and signs of rosacea, vascular rosacea tends to develop where the blood vessels on the cheeks and nose get visible. With this, the facial skin gets over sensitive with the skin becoming oily and producing dandruff. Next phase of rosacea is inflammatory rosacea where you find the small, red pustules that not only appear, but tend to persist to spread across the forehead, chin, nose and cheeks.
In some rare and severe cases of rosacea, the oil glands found in the nose and cheeks tend to enlarge to form a buildup of tissue on and around the nose. This is a complication of rosacea that is less common in men and tends to develop and worsen over a period of years.
Over half the sufferers of rosacea suffer from ocular rocea where they experience a burning and gritty sensation in the eyes. With this symptom, the patient finds that the inner skin of their eyelids inflame and appear scaly to develop into conjunctivitis. Sometimes there may also be blocking and enlarging of the oil glands found in the eyelids called chalazions. However if one develops these signs and symptoms, there is no need of worrying about eyesight getting affected as it does not get affected at all.
When suffering from rosacea, there is no rule stating that the infections lie symmetrical or asymmetrical on the face. This is because rosacea tends to manifest itself in different symptoms in different people. These patients also have a varying level of severity that is different in different parts of the face. It has been noted that rosacea starts with a red spot or patch on a cheek which then spreads to other areas of the face. Of course, some sufferers of rosacea tend to exhibit similar symptoms on both sides of the face.
Many sufferers of rosacea complain of facial swelling, itching and burning. There are also some people who suffer from edema on the face which is usually visible at the start of the disease. This is why it is inferred that the flushing on the face is due to the build up of fluids in the tissues of the face. This swelling usually occurs in the nasolabial folds which are creases that lie from the nose to the side of the mouth. With this, there is usually a 'baggy cheek' look to the sufferer.
There is no basic cause of rosacea found out as yet. However researchers contend that rosacea tends to arise from a combination of hereditary and environmental factors. There are some theories to the cause of rosacea like the blood vessel disorder where you find swelling of the vessels in the face. Another reason is said to be a chronic bacterial infection that attacks the gastrointestinal system. This infection is called Helicobacter pylori infection. There are some researchers that suggest the tiny mites found in human hair follicles cause the clogging of sebaceous gland openings. However, none of these theories have been proved right.
So it can be seen that though there are many known signs and symptoms of rosacea, its cause has not been found out as yet.
