Rosacea Laser Treatment September 2, 2010
Rosacea is a vascular disorder and increasingly becoming widespread among the masses. Fair skinned adult male and female aged between 30 and 50 are most vulnerable to this disease although it may affect any age group.
Many people do not know that they are affected by this disease. Initially, rosacea creates red color patches on the face, chin, and nose like acne. If it is not attended instantly and properly in the initial stages, rosacea not only changes ones appearance but also creates physiological and social problems. People affected with this disease try to shy away from social gatherings and avoid public contacts. This slowly brings resentment in them leading to withdrawal from any sort of interactions. A recent survey shows that this disorder has seriously affected professional interactions and engagements.
The symptoms of rosacea are red color patches on the cheeks, chin, nose and forehead. The appearance of visible blood vessels on the face like pimples or bumps are also an indicator of this disease. Early treatment of rosacea is highly advisable as this not only controls the disease but also prevents the blood vessels from enlarging. Full fledged treatments are not yet available for rosacea, in spite of umpteen efforts, but there are some medications adopted to control its spread and minimize the effects. Tropical products, oral medications and laser therapy are some of the widely advocated treatments. Invariably, some of these methods are used as combination for better and effective results.
Rosacea laser treatment focuses on two main lesions, telangiectasias and flushing facial redness. Some small and linear blood vessels appear on the surface of the skin, particularly on cheeks, near nasal area and around nostrils. These are often called broken blood vessels. Telangiectasia which is a visible blood vessel usually occurs on the people affected with rosacea. As nasal vessels are more resistant to treatment, the patients may need multiple treatments. Pulsed dye lasers and green lasers are the two common methods for the treatment of telangiectasias. Flushing and facial redness are components of rosacea that can also be treated with a pulsed dye laser. Generally, repeated treatments are required for complete cure.
Intense light and laser therapy are commonly used in the treatment of telangiectasia and also for rhinophyma (enlarged nose). It minimizes the effects by destroying diluted blood vessels. Doctors advise to continue the medication for managing papules and pustules which is often associated with rosacea. Vascular lasers are used to heat the tiny blood vessels by generating light in specific wavelengths. The laser beams are targeted at the vessels or specifically on the lesion. As a result the vessels disintegrate and are absorbed by the body. Vascular lasers can be adjusted so that the pulse of light is on for longer time and helps in reducing the bruising after the treatment.
Rosacea laser treatment varies from mild to moderate, and in most cases the patients need not be administered with anesthesia. Rosacea laser treatments can be performed on any person affected by this disease irrespective of their age group or gender. However, some physicians may not treat patients who have the history of isotretinoin due to the risk of a typical scarring.
One of the main objectives of rosacea laser treatment is to improve the skin's appearance safely and efficiently. Maximum removal of vascular lesion and lightening of vascular lesion to a reasonable extent is the other motives. Proper care has to be taken while performing rosacea laser treatment. Patient's eyes should be protected from the laser lights by goggles or metal eye shields. There should not be excessive tanning on patients; anesthesia should be administered before 30 to 60 minutes prior to performing treatment. After the treatment all creams and cosmetics should be removed with care from the skin immediately.
Some patients may experience redness, swelling and soreness within 24 hours of treatment, which slowly subsides. Some may even experience peeling like sunburn, bruising under the skin for next 10 days. Doctors generally advise three treatments with six weeks intervals. Telangiectasias in small vessels may be cleared in single treatment, but the larger vessels and nasal telangiectasias may require some repeated treatments with the interval of 4 to 6 weeks. Complications are very rare in treating vascular lesions provided the physician is well trained and experienced in such treatments. Bruising is a very common problem that resolves within a weeks period. There may be some mild crusting, a certain degree of pain, redness and small swelling. This will resolve within a day or two. There may a temporary pigment alteration, post inflammatory hyper pigmentation or darkening of skin.
Many types of lasers are used in rosacea laser treatment. Pulsed dye laser is useful for treating port-wine stains for patients of all ages. It produces highest degree of success in neck and head rosacea treatment. Minimum risk of scarring or pigment alteration is found in these types of lasers. Dynamic cooling system in some of these models minimizes the pain and epidermal injury. There are some possible infections like rare bacterial infection when outer skin is injured or while cooling with cryogen spray or contact cooling. Simple wound care is enough to guard such infections.
Pulsed ND: YAG (KTP) green laser is an ideal device to treat superficial vessels without bruising. It is the more suitable for lighter skinned people. In this device skin is cooled with contact cooling or cooling gels. Intense pulsed light source delivers multiple wavelengths simultaneously. It is very useful for port-wine stains, telangiectasias. Recently developed devices like intense pulsed light sources (IPLs) function like laser but emits light in multiple wavelengths instead of laser beams which creates bruising.
Experts believe that laser treatments are the most efficient and less painful method for all stages of rosacea treatments. Rosacea laser treatment costs any where between $1500 and $3000. Finding a skilled and well trained doctor in laser treatment is very important and this can be done only by getting references from the people who were earlier treated by him.
