Rosacea: Treating and Preventing the Symptoms
July 2, 2009

Rosacea is a skin condition that causes some areas on the face like cheeks, nose, or forehead turning into red flushing condition. Although it is not a fatal symptom, people who have this complex problem most of the time feel annoyed and embarrassed every time their face turn into red. Rosacea happens to both men and women, but it is mostly women who suffer from this skin condition.

The exact factor of Rosacea is still a puzzle until now, but some experts have speculated that this condition is occasionally caused by damaged blood vessels. Even though the cause is uncertain, luckily the professionals have some suggestions of home treatments to cope with the blushing.

Cold compress to cool it down

Heat and humidity are some factors that can cause flushing and blushing to appear. Therefore an immediate treatment when it happens is to take a clean cloth or towel, make it wet with ice cold water and put it gently on the regions where the red spots appear. Within short time, it will cool down the face areas.

Tinted make-up neutralizes the red spots

It is very annoying to get the red color on the face, especially at times when it is the least expected. Therefore it is highly suggested for women who wear make-ups to use a green-tinted under foundation because the green color would create an excellent effect on a blushing face and make the flush disappear. The green tinted foundation is available on common beauty stores.

Using a gentle cleanser might prevent the blushing

When you use a liquid facial cleanser to remove the make-ups, it is advisable to use a gentle cleanser that contains sodium lauryl sulfate or disodium lauryl sulfosuccinate because those ingredients are much softer than most of other facial cleanser and it might be a really good way to hamper flushing and blushing.

Chamomile products

Chamomile is recognized as one ingredient that has been successful in process of relieving some effects of Rosacea. Therefore, people who have Rosacea condition is suggested to use products that are containing chamomile such as chamomile soap, cleansers, lotions, and other products. However, there is a warning for people who are allergic to ragweed. If you have this kind of allergy, then this treatment might not be suitable and you should avoid chamomile products.

Cucumber moisturizer

Since all you need is something cool to soothe your skin, cucumber moisturizer is highly recommendable because cucumber is known to be one substance that gives fresh and relaxing feeling. After using a facial cleanser, applying a moisturizer that contains cucumber extracts will help to keep your face cool and fresh.

Choose only soft cosmetics for sensitive skin

Most of cosmetics are known to use lots of chemical ingredients that are not so good for sensitive skin. Therefore the producers of cosmetics industry decided to make cosmetics for sensitive skin with special chemical materials that are usually gentler than the standard. For people with Rosacea, it will also be useful to use that kind of cosmetics to prevent flushing.

Avoid using anti-wrinkles cream too much

Many anti-wrinkles and anti-aging products on the market are the sources that lead into blushing. That is why it is better to minimize the use of those kinds of products. If you still insist on using anti-wrinkles cream, it is best to use products that have alpha hydroxy acids as ingredients. Always read the label of the cream carefully to prevent getting the wrong type, and make sure you purchase only anti-aging cream that has percentage of acid 2.5 or lower. Applying the cream on the face once a day should be enough and if the red spots appear after using the product, stop using the cream immediately.

Say no to abrasive

One common source that leads to flushing and blushing is abrasion. So it is highly recommended to stay away from any kind of abrasive materials that can cause scratches, cuts, and abrasions. Several examples of things that should be avoided are: brush, cleaning powder, scrubs, etc.

Don't expose too much to the sun

Try to avoid the sun exposure as much as possible. If necessary, stay under the shade at all time. You need to remember, the heat is one of the main causes of blushing and the using of sunscreen will not be much help to prevent it.

Titanium dioxide sunscreen to avoid the sun exposure

Getting the advice to use this kind of sunscreen does not mean that you can actually walk directly under the sun. Staying in the shade is very important. But you can also get indirect sunlight everywhere. So the titanium dioxide sunscreen would be the perfect solution for you every time you go out.

Choosing the right outfit

Wearing thick clothes is definitely one thing to avoid. If you want to stay warm, try to cover yourself with several light clothes to allow some air to cool down your body.

Wool, one thing not to wear

Wool products should be avoided because it is a material that will cause a human body warm. And since warmth is not really good for people with Rosacea condition, wearing wool can cause the appearance of the red spots on the skin.

Avoid spicy food

Eating spicy food causes flushing and blushing. People with Rosacea condition should not eat food containing chili, peppers, Tabasco, and other hot and spicy ingredients.

Reduce the amount of alcohol consumption

Consuming alcohol is one not recommended for people with Rosacea. Alcohol should be avoided as much as possible.

Stress is Rosacea's best friend

Avoid stress. It might not be as easy as it sounds but there are some proves that the redness tend to appear when someone is under a depressing situation. So positive thinking is very important in order to minimize the possibility of blushing.

Rosacea might be irritating and embarrassing, but it does not mean that you have to suffer the whole time. With those non-medical suggestions, hopefully they would be a big help for treating and preventing symptoms of Rosacea.
