Usually, acne begins at puberty and normally disappears by the early twenties. In most of the cases, acne may exist in to adulthood.

In such cases, acne includes severe forms that affect the body as well as the face (this afflicts males more than females). Acne associated with the menstrual cycle in women is of the severe kind. In some cases, acne appears only in adulthood. Women are more likely to be affected than men.

There are several reasons for this. As women get older, pattern of change in the hormones, causing the sebaceous glands to develop acne. Acne may also result from hormonal changes caused by ovarian cysts and pregnancy.

Acne is also kept in check by birth control pills. When they are discontinues acne return. Cosmetics too may prove to be a sufficient cause for acne.

Acne is not caused by food yet food allergies do worsen acne. Following a strict diet will nit clear skin.

While some people feel that their acne is aggravated by certain foods- particularly chocolates. Colas, peanuts, shellfish and some fatty foods- there is no scientific evidence which suggests that food causes or influences acne.

Avoid foods that seem to worsen your acne and, for your overall health, eat a balanced diet. A well balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, and plenty of water, helps cure acne.
