Tea Tree Oil and Acne

July 20, 2008

Although tea tree oil cannot cure the cause of acne it has been proven to kill acne bacteria. Hence it is able to reduce acne symptoms. Tea tree oil tends to cause redness and stinging on skin contact, and it may be irritating to sensitive skin. It is best applied sparingly or diluted with water or aloe vera at first, to see how your skin responds.

Tea tree oil is a superior disinfectant for use in hospitals, and can be used for other skin conditions like tinea due to its fungicidal properties.

History

Australian aboriginals used tea tree leaves which they crushed and applied to wounds. Later the leaves were used for tea. Hence its name.

Active Ingredients

The smell of tea tree oil is due to the terpenoids. They are: terpinen-4-ol (35%), gamma-terpinene (19%), alpha-terpinene (8%), p-cymene (7%) and 1,8-cineole (4%).

Australian Study

In one study conducted in Australia it was found that although 5% tea tree oil was not quite as effective as benzoyl peroxide in the treatment of acne, the benzoyl peroxide caused side effects in the majority of the subjects. All things considered tea tree oil is an excellent choice of treatments for acne.
