When people think of a baby, they typically picture a perfect, pink face that is adorably cute. The majority of people never think about acne or pimples when they picture a baby. However, the truth is that infant acne occurs with many babies. For most, this acne starts between the three to four weeks of age, but it can also be present in newborns at time.
For parents, especially first time parents, it can be quite stressing to see little red bumps covering their babies face. However, parents can relax because infant acne is temporary and doesn’t require the baby to undergo any treatment. The acne may stay on the infants face for a while and it may disappear very slowly, but it will go away. There is the possibility with some infants that the acne may come and go in periodic breakouts until they turn six months old.
The cause of infant acne is thought to be because of hormones in their system that was crossed over while the mother was carrying the baby through the placenta. The acne on an infant can be the visible evidence that the hormones are still active and a possible sign that the baby’s system is working on processing the hormones out of the body for good.
In most cases, infant acne is the process of the body doing a cleansing process as the baby’s system clears out the unwanted hormones. Each infant will responding in different ways to their acne and many of this response you won’t be aware of, infant acne is just one of them. Infant acne is thought to be a natural process of the babies system and there nothing that parents can do to prevent it from happening. It is actually very important to allow the process of infant acne to continue until it clears on its own, otherwise the baby’s body may struggle in other ways to remove the excess hormones.
It is common that many people think infant acne is caused by dirty or oily skin, so as a result they clean the babies face more frequently in an effort to keep it clean. This is actually the last thing you want to do to help clear the acne since the frequent washing will often result in the inflammation of the skin. Therefore, its important to remember that why you see signs of infant acne that it is hormones and no dirt or oil. While you don’t want to over wash an infants face detergents, milk and spit up can make the acne worse so it’s important to mop up these spills as quickly as possible. You can use a mild detergent or baby soap when cleaning their face once or twice a day and you should always make sure the babies face is uncovered. Sheets, blankets or other items can aggravate infant acne especially if the blanket or sheet has been washed in a harsh detergent and is held against the face for long periods.
While all of this information can be a bit discouraging and you may have to deal with little red dots around your babies smile in all the photos up to six months old you should always keep in mind that infant acne is nothing to worry about. It will clear up with time and you will still have plenty of time to enjoy your baby and take photos without the acne getting in the way. Infant acne may be visible but it is a natural and required process of the body that you should allow to take its course.
