Back Acne: Treatment, Causes and Prevention
February 3, 2012

Back acne is a common form of acne. However, it can be difficult to treat as a result of the thousands of sebaceous glands that produce a large amount of oil on the back. Because of this increased amount of oil there is a greater chance that the pores and hair follicles will become blocked and produce acne. In some severe cases back acne can also produce cysts and nodules which require more than the normal treatment to get rid of.

Another problem is the fact that the back is in contact with clothing and other material more often than the face which can irritate the skin and aggravate the condition. Physical wise it is difficult to clean and apply treatment to acne on the back. You will often need assistance from a family member to reach the problem areas on your back. However, its best to ask for assistance than to prevent treatment because you are embarrassed to ask.

Treatment of Back Acne

You can treat mild to moderate back acne with normal treatments through a combination of cleaning, moisturizing and applying a treatment cream for acne. This is typically a non-invasive cleaning followed by a lotion that contains glycolic acid at an eight to ten percent solution. Then after that you should apply a two and a half percent solution of benzoyl peroxide generously to the back and a moisturizer if needed.

However, this form of treatment for back acne should not be used anywhere else on the body. The skin on your back is tougher than the skin anywhere else and can handle this tough of a treatment regimen. It is also advisable that you test the benzoyl peroxide on a small spot of skin before applying generously since one to three percent of the population can be allergic to benzoyl peroxide.

Another drawback is the fact that benzoyl peroxide can bleach your clothing. Therefore, while you are treating your back acne be sure to wear white so you won’t end up bleaching your favorite clothing. Even after the benzoyl peroxide has been on your back for several hours it can still bleach your clothing so be careful when wearing anything you don’t want bleached.

Other Treatment Options

Another way you can help treat your back acne is to figure out what causes your back acne or aggravates it. Sometimes wearing a heavy backpack across your upper shoulders and part of your back will either cause acne or aggravate the current acne conditions. If you carry a backpack on a daily basis and have trouble with acne in these areas then you should try switching to a shoulder bag or a pack that has carry handles. After you acne clears up again you can try using a backpack for short periods of time. However, if the irritation returns then you will know what is causes your acne breakouts and you can find other alternatives.

In addition some types of clothing can cause acne or aggravate current acne conditions. Tight fitting clothing that rubs against your skin will aggravate your acne in addition to causing sweating. Sweat will cause excess oil buildup which will then cause additional acne breakouts on your back.

For areas already suffering from acne breakouts rough clothing can aggravate the affected area. This irritation can make the existing acne condition worse and cause new acne breakouts.

Before doing any treatment for your back acne you should determine how severe it is as with other forms of acne. Find out if it is mild, moderate or severe. Once you recognize the type and severity of your back acne you can then treat it accordingly. In addition, your skin type will effect the types of treatment required for your acne.
