Baby Acne
July 27, 2008

If you are new mother, one of the most common conditions you can expect to see on your baby is acne. While this can be startling for a new parent, it is not a serious issue and you shouldn’t be overly concerned about finding the cause or a cure for the acne.

When some babies are born, they have small red bumps on their face. This isn’t baby acne but rather something called “milia”. This usually disappears after a couple of weeks. However, baby acne will appear at about the same time as “milia” in the same two-week period. Baby acne appears as small white heads that are sometimes surrounded by red, irritated skin. It is typically found on the cheeks, chin, forehead and back.

Hormones and excessively oily skin is the primary cause of acne in teenagers and adults. This is true to an extent with babies since hormones are transmitted through the placenta to the baby and can be the cause of the facial spots. There is no real idea for the cause of baby acne from the science community and there is no known treatment even though most doctors wouldn’t prescribe a treatment for something that typically clears up in a few weeks.

Since baby, acne typically appears on the face where extra irritation can occur as a result of spit up, rubbed against sheets that are washed in harsh detergent, or drool. However, you can get right of this slight aggravation by changing your laundry soap and wiping the babies face with a damp cloth when needed.

You shouldn’t try any home remedies such as creams or oils with a baby since this will typically irritate the skin more. For babies nothing more is required than a washing once a day with a mild baby soap. If your baby happens to have acne the appears to be getting significantly worse then after talking with your doctor they may prescribe a cream or other medication. Your doctor will also check to see if a breastfeeding mother is taking any medications that may have caused acne by being transferred through the milk.

Acne is a condition that can affect people at any age, which is why baby acne is so common. Acne is the largest skin problem in the world today and affects large numbers of people throughout the world. Baby acne can be a difficulty for parents.

Baby acne can occur in young babies around two to three weeks old. It is most common in boys and can be seen up until the six month old mark. It can appear on various parts of the body but is least common on the bottom or back and most common on the forehead, cheeks and chin.

Baby acne very rarely needs to be treated with medication. Therefore, it is not necessary to go to the store or your doctor right away looking for remedies to baby acne. It is actually best to not use any remedy at all and just let the acne run its course. If you are concerned about the acne then you can see your doctor regularly and they will monitor the condition. If they believe the condition gets serious enough to require medication then they will prescribe the appropriate drug at the right amounts for your baby.

Most of the time baby acne goes away by itself. A gentle facial cleansing at least once or twice a day with a mild baby soap and water will help clear the acne quicker and keep the skin clear once it is gone. However, do not scrub the babies face since this is counterproductive.
