Acne on Scalp: Causes, Shampoo and Treatment
July 4, 2009

Scalp acne is the mildest form of acne known as scalp folliculitis. It is an acne that develops on the skin under you hair. While it is not as common as the typical acne that you can get on your face and body it is more frequent then people realize. Scalp acne isn’t as visible as the acne on other parts of the body. This makes it harder to treat and keep clean. In addition the bumps and cysts that result can make daily hair care and styling difficult.

Scalp Acne Causes

Like other forms of acne, scalp folliculitis is caused by a bacteria that grows inside the pores clogged from an excess of oils and an accumulation of dead skin cells. As the bacteria grows swollen, red and infected areas are produced.

As with other forms of acne, scalp acne is also triggered during periods of stress. The condition can also develop when the scalp has more oil than usual which can occur when the hair isn’t washed frequently or when you use hair care products that have a lot of oil in them.

Forms of Scalp Acne

Scalp acne is usually very itchy which makes it difficult to leave alone. In the mild form of scalp acne the pustules are usually small, crusty and sore. Most of the time they will appear on the upper forehead at the hairline. People who have scalp acne can have anywhere from a few pustules to many.

A more severe form of scalp acne is called acne necrotica miliaris which is seen in large inflamed papules that have black colored crusts. This type of scalp acne leaves behind scars that look like the scars caused by Chicken Pox.

African American men are faced with an even more severe form of scalp acne. However, this form of acne can affect anyone regardless of their race or sex. This form of scalp acne is a rare condition that is characterized by a combination of large cysts and smaller pustules and papules at the same time.

Treatment for Scalp Acne

The mildest forms of scalp acne can be treated like all other forms of acne. You should keep the area clean by using a product that has salicylic acid as the main active ingredient. However, these products can cause dryness so you should only use it on the infected areas. If you want better control when applying these products then you should use a cotton wool or ball to apply the product.

Since oil is a factor that contributes to scalp acne it is important to use a shampoo that is specifically formulated to help those with oily hair. Some people have even found success in using hair products designed to treat seborrhea on their scalp acne. If you just use shampoo to clean your hair then it is a good idea to check the labels on you hair care products and make any necessary changes.

If you have one of the more severe forms of scalp acne then you shouldn’t attempt to treat it until after you have talked with your doctor or a dermatologist. They can help you determine how extensive and severe you scalp acne is and then from there determine which course of treatment is best for you.

If you have scalp acne you should definitely not use products that have benzoyl peroxide to treat your acne. When benzoyl peroxide comes into contact with hair it will change the hairs color and unless you want to bleach your hair this is not a good idea. Those with chemically textured or color treated hair are the most prone to have problems with benzoyl peroxide.
