What is Acne?

Acne is a name for pores that have become clogged by sebum, pimples, nodules or cysts. Acne typically appears on the face, neck, shoulders, chest, back, upper arms and upper legs. The majority of teenagers and some adults have problems with acne for an extended period of time. Acne is a condition that spreads across all age groups, race or sex. Hundreds of millions throughout the world are affected by acne. The most common problem from acne is the unpleasant look that comes from the scars and blemishes of acne.

Who Gets Acne?

Nearly everybody in the world can have acne and will have it at some period in their life. Usually when the body enters puberty at age twelve and shifts into high gear when the hormones starts taking over is when acne becomes a problem for many.

About forty percent of teenagers have severe cases of acne that require medical treatment. However, many of acne cases are resolved without the need for fancy treatments and several trips to the doctor. There is now a wide range of prescription and over the counter products to select from that will help you deal with acne.

What to Do When you Have Acne

If you have a serious acne problem then you should go to the doctor. They will be able to determine how serious the problem is and decide which medication is appropriate for you condition. They may also be able to give you a cream that can help your acne scars. However, there are other things you can try first.

You can try gently cleaning your skin. First you should wash it with a mild cleanser once in the morning and once in the evening and any time you do heavy exercise. You should also thoroughly rinse your skin after washing it. Do not use astringents unless your skin has excessive oils and even then astringents should only be used on the oily spots.

You should avoid frequently handling your skin. If you squeeze, pinch or pick at your acne blemishes then you risk developing scars of dark spots. You should also avoid touching and rubbing your skin lesions that are caused by acne.

You should also shave very carefully. You should test both electric and safety razors to see which is most comfortable for you skin. If you plan on using a safety razor then you should have a sharp blade and soften your skin and beard with soap and water before you apply your shaving cream. If you shave lightly and only when necessary you can avoid nicking your acne blemishes.

You should also avoid getting a sunburn or a suntan. A lot of the medications that help treat acne will make you more prone to sunburn. So you should take extra cautions when going outside or when you are going to be in direct contact with the sun for awhile.

Treatment for Mild Cases of Acne

If you have mild cases of acne or an occasional breakout of blackheads and whiteheads then you can use  a topical medicine. You can apply this medicine directly on the affected skin area or directly on each pimple. Salicylic acid and sulfur are the two common ingredients in topical creams for mild acne treatment. The topical treatments for acne come in many forms. A drugstore or pharmacy has a wide variety of anti-acne creams, gels, soaps and lotions to choose from. While these are good for mild acne cases they do need to be used for several months.

If you notice any unpleasant side effects then you should stop using the treatments. It is best to go to the doctor and discuss the issue even if the side effects have stopped. Irritation, swelling or burning are common especially in those people who have sensitive or delicate skin.
