Acne Cyst: Cause and Treatment September 2, 2010
Acne is commonly associated with pimples and zits. However, there are many forms of acne that a person can get. Acne most often occurs in your facial skin when a bacteria develops in the follicles of your skin. Acne can range from mild to severe breakouts. These breakouts can be either slightly discomforting to annoying to sever scarring both emotionally and physically.
Cystic acne is one of the severe forms of acne. This is when acne forms a cyst that is filled with pus. This form of acne can cause serious scarring to your skin, especially if you pick or squeeze the pus from the cyst. Cystic acne is a much more painful form of acne and the potential effect for scarring can cause great psychological repercussions.
Understanding Cystic Acne
Unlike the small whitehead pustules that you may be used to seeing on the surface of your skin if you suffer from acne, cystic acne appears on the skin as a large irritated bump. The pustule of cystic acne is often hidden deep beneath the skin’s surface.
Cystic acne is mainly caused by hormonal shifts in your body that result in an overproduction on oil or sebum in your skin glands at an unnatural rate. The gland will then become swollen and eventually burst, but before this happens the sebum will swell and harden into a clump that is too large to escape by means of your natural skin pores. When the gland bursts it will cause an irritation that results in inflammation. However, before it bursts the cyst can remain deep under the skin for a very long time which is what makes cystic acne so hard to treat. Because cystic acne happens so far below the skins surface your personal hygiene has very little to do with the cysts development.
What You Shouldn’t Do
Before you start thinking about what you can do to prevent or treat cystic acne you should figure out what you shouldn’t do. The worst thing you can try to do if you suffer from cystic acne is to try to force the cyst that is deep under the skin to come to the surface prematurely. If you try to force the cyst to the surface and you cause the cyst to burst this will cause some serious and major acne scarring. When a cyst bursts it creates some of the worst acne scars that people can get. These scars will often leave your fact looking worse than if you just lived with the cystic acne.
What You Can Do
However, this doesn’t mean you can’t do anything to treat or prevent cystic acne from happen. There are still several options that you can do for cystic acne. Most of these options are very similar to regular acne breakouts. Creams and antibiotics will often help with clearing up existing cystic acne. Daily facial cleansers and a regular intake of the proper vitamins and minerals as well as a change in your diet can help prevent cystic acne from occurring.
If you do develop cystic acne then your next step may be in dealing with the scars that are left behind. You have the option of several treatments in this case from surgical treatments, chemical peels and laser treatment. All forms of acne scar treatment have been proven effective of at least reducing the appearance of scars so you just have to find the right treatment for you.
Whether or not you are preventing or treating cystic acne or trying to get rid of the resulting scars it is always best to talk with your doctor first. Your doctor is most qualified to discuss with you the advantages and disadvantages of various treatment and prevention options. They can often help you find the best medicine or regime for you.
