Acne Rosacea: Causes, Sign, Symptoms, Side Effects and Treatment
September 2, 2010

What is Rosacea

Rosacea is a form of skin disease that causes the middle third of the face to have a persistent redness. These are typically the areas that normally blush, usually the forehead, the chin and the lower half of the nose. The small blood vessels in these areas dilate or become enlarged which causes them to become more visible through the skin. They appear as tiny red lines known as telangiectasias. Sometimes pimples can occur in rosacea which cause it to resemble teenage acne. Rosacea is often mistaken for acne and it is even called acne rosacea.

Rosacea and Acne

Rosacea and acne are really two different things. Rosacea, unlike acne, is not a common problem in teenagers rather it often occurs in adults between the ages of thirty and fifty and usually in those with fair skin. Rosacea also doesn’t cause blackheads or whiteheads as some forms of acne do. Rosacea is often more frequent in women but more severe in men.

Causes of Rosacea

Scientists and dermatologists still do not know the cause of rosacea. Rosacea is common in those who blush easily. It is believed that emotional factors such as stress, fear, anxiety or embarrassment may trigger the blushing that aggravate rosacea. Although rosacea flare-ups can be caused by changes in the weather such as strong winds or changes in the humidity. Sun exposure also aggravates rosacea.

Signs and Symptoms

Rosacea can typically be seen as an inflammation on the face. When it first develops it appears, disappears and reappears. However, over time those with rosacea will notice their skin fails to return to a normal color and this is when the enlarged blood vessels and pimples arrive. Rosacea does not usually reverse itself. It can last for years and become worse if it is left untreated.

Treatment

There is no cure for rosacea but it can be controlled through proper and regulated treatment. Over the counter medicines for acne should not be used for rosacea since they will often irritate the skin and make rosacea worse.

Treatment typically will involve both oral and topical medicines. Typically a doctor will prescribe oral antibiotics such as tetracycline. The first dose is usually high and then it will be tapered down to a maintenance level.

Topical antibiotic creams such as metronidazole is also used to reduce the inflammation and redness caused by rosacea. Other forms of topical antibiotic creams include erythromycin and clindamycin.

Short-term topical cortisone preparations may also be recommended by your doctor. Used at the right strength then can also be used to reduce inflammation. Some doctors are also starting to prescribe tretinoin or isotretoin used in the treatment of severe acne.

What to Avoid

If you suffer from rosacea then you should avoid smoking, eating spicy foods or drinking hot beverages and alcoholic drinks. These things can often cause flushing which should be avoided if you don’t want to make your rosacea worse.

You should also limit your exposure to sunlight and to extreme hot and cold temperature since this can trigger the symptoms of rosacea. By limiting your exposure you can help relieve some of the symptoms of rosacea.

Strong cortisone medications shouldn’t be used on the face since these will cause the widening of the tiny blood vessels. This will then cause the appearance of rosacea to get worse.

Effects of Rosacea

Rosacea can often be embarrassing once it first develops. However, rosacea is not a serious medical condition. If rosacea is diagnosed quickly and treated properly then your rosacea should not prevent you from enjoying a long and productive life.
