Yasmin Acne February 3, 2012
Acne affects majority of the teenagers and many adults well into their middle ages. It is very much dreaded and despaired by people who suffer from this very common skin disorder. Before we go into the aspect of how we treat acne, let us understand what really triggers acne. Acne is very common amongst the teenagers and for some into early adulthood also. These usually occur from fluctuating hormone levels at various cycles of life, such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause. Acne affects both men and women equally.
Acne occurs when the oil glands produce excess oil which gets accumulated with dead skin cells and close the skin pores and the skin gets inflamed as the bacteria is trapped inside the pore and the immune system tries to attack the bacteria then pus is formed leading to a pimple, whitehead or blackhead.
You must be wondering how a birth control pill can control acne. It is a fact that birth control pills can be used as a contraceptive as well as to treat acne. Now one wonders if the latest birth control pills can do a good job with the acne treatments. Sometimes doctors suggest birth control pills to women who are suffering from moderate as well as mild acne problems. The estrogen present in the contraceptives does help in reversing the androgen effect, which can source the skin to make too much oil that generally causes for the blockage of the skin pores and causes for acne problems.
For years, many researchers all over the world have been studying the efficacy of oral contraceptives in controlling acne. In one particular research project in Denmark, researchers examined a number of participants including females and males in between the age of 15 to 22 years, have come to notice that using these oral contraceptives was associated with a less occurrence of acne.
In a similar study in Germany, the researchers tested the effectiveness of the contraceptive is generally marketed as Yasmin and after nine cycles of treatment with Yasmin, nearly 40 women experienced a wonderful decrease in their acne scratch count.
Besides this Yasmin birth control pill, Ortho Tri-Cyclen is also used effectively to treat acne problems. In a study it has been found that Ortho Tri-Cyclen was much more effective against a placebo in 257 healthy female subjects between the age of 15 to 49 years. After completion of six treatment cycles, patients using this Ortho Tri-Cyclen saw a 62% of reduction in acne problems, while placebo users got 38% reduction in acne scratch counts.
In the end, we can say that Yasmin has been proved to be a double utility drug, which can be taken for birth control as well as the avoidance of acne. It must be noted that the prescription of Yasmin for acne has not been approved by any national agency or authority like the FDA, but on clinical studies, it has been proven to be very effective for many subjects. So, before you try Yasmin for treatment of acne, better consult your dermatologist and take his/her advice before starting Yasmin.
