Retinoic acid is included in products at various levels. The various levels are meant to treat different types of acne symptoms and conditions. For blackheads creams containing only 0.05% Retinoic acid will usually work. These creams have the potential to soften blackheads.

The higher the Retin-A content the more the cream should be used with caution. The higher the percentage the greater the chance that it may cause irritation, erythematic and exfoliation. Always remember to apply your cream only when the skin is dry. Repeated exposure to sunlight while using Retin-A products is known to cause an irritation to the skin surface. If this occurs either reduce the percentage of Retin-A for better results or consider applying the product at night.

It is best to start with a mild percentage to prevent an initial flaring up of acne conditions in the first weeks. Retin-A is not an anti-bacterial so its only action is to soften the keratins. You can consider applying Retin-A on alternative days with benzoyl peroxide products.

The Effect of Retin-A

Much of the studies with Retin-A point to beneficial results with both serious cases of acne and in sun damaged skin. However, as with any medications there are side effects you should be aware of before starting to use the product.

Minor side effects are common with Retin-A but they are often mild and will usually go away in six to eight weeks. They may include a darkening of the skin, a slight discoloration or redness. Slight peeling of the skin has been reported along with swelling.
