Exfoliating Skin: Soaps, Body Scrubs
February 9, 2010

Exfoliating the skin is an excellent way to improve you skin condition. Not only will it help reduce and prevent acne, but it will provide you with smoother, younger looking skin. Consider adding exfoliating soaps or body scrubs to your skin care routine. Many people believe exfoliating the skin is something painful that takes a lot of time. However, with many of the soaps and body scrubs today this isn’t the case.

Using a body scrub is an excellent way of removing the dead skin cells and help to leave you skin smooth and glowing. There are various types of body scrubs and you need to find one that will work good with your skin. Most body scrubs can be used at least once a week while you are in the shower or bath. Body scrubs don’t have to be expensive or time consuming.

Exfoliating Soaps

There are ingredients in these soaps that help to naturally scrub away the top layer of dead skin cells. Oatmeal, kaolin clay and finely ground pumice are just a few of the ingredients in these soaps.

However, make sure the exfoliating soap you are using is moisture rich so that it will also nourish your new skin at the same time. So try to look for those that also contain shea butter, soybean oil, jojoba oil or cocoa butter in with the dry ingredients.

Body Scrubs

There are two types of body scrubs, salt scrubs and sugar scrubs. Body scrubs can either be applied by hand or with a loofah sponge or body brush. Using a sponge or brush will help to take away the top layer of dead skin. Salt scrubs will help to increase your circulation and have more exfoliating power than a sugar based scrub. If you have sensitive skin then you may want to use a sugar scrub since these are more gentle than salt.

Both salt and sugar body scrubs will remove the dead skin cells on the top layer of skin and remove dirt and toxins from the skin. At the same time these scrubs will help give you skin a revitalized, healthy appearance. Sugar scrubs have the added benefit of anti-aging properties that occur naturally in the sugar. Sugar produces glycolic acid which is an alpha hydroxy acid that has been used for years to help rejuvenate the skin. Therefore, sugar scrubs will give you skin a younger appearance the natural way.

Body scrubs can be used either when the skin is wet or dry. However, for those with sensitive skin it is best to avoid both salt scrubs and dry bathing. When you start your exfoliating routine with a body scrub you should start out with at least once a week.

When using a brush or sponge it is best not to be too vigorous in rubbing. This will cause the skin to be irritated which can make acne worse or cause new acne conditions to develop. If irritation does develop it is best to know that most of the time it is not the body scrub or soap itself that is causing the irritation. There are a few times where the ingredients will cause a person to have a reaction but most of the time it is the frequency of use or how the product is used. Most of the time body scrubs and soaps will work just fine without brushes or sponges, using a clean cloth or your hands works just fine to help exfoliate the skin.

Always remember that if you have sensitive skin you should use sugar scrubs when you skin is wet or damp so you don’t over dry or irritate your skin further. After using your scrub or soap to exfoliate your skin be sure to follow it up with a moisturizer that is right for your type of skin.
