Benzoyl Peroxide: Use, Side Effects and Precautions
September 2, 2010
Benzoyl Peroxide can be found in the form of many brand names including: Benoxyl, Benzac AC, Benzac W, Benzagel, Brevoxyl, Desquam, Fostex, Persa-Gel, Triaz, Vanoxide and Zoderm. All forms of Benzoyl Peroxide can be used for the treatment of mild to moderate cases of acne.
How to Use Benzoyl Peroxide
Benzoyl Peroxide is used as a topical on the affected area only. The medication should not make contact with your eyes, the inside of your nose or mouth, or on any skin that is inflamed or damaged. Contact with any of these areas will cause further irritation. You use a liquid wash or bar soap version of Benzoyl Peroxide once or twice a day in place of your regular soap. You wet your skin before applying the medication, gently work up lather, and then rinse thoroughly. Under no circumstances should you scrub the skin. Benzoyl Peroxide in the form of creams, lotions or gels is typically applied to the effected area once or twice a day. Before applying a dose on the effected area, you should gently wash the area with a mild cleanser and pat dry. Then you add a small amount of the medicine and rub it in gently. Benzoyl Peroxide also comes in the form of pads. As with the creams, you should wash the affected area with a mild cleanser and dry the affected area. Then you apply the pad once or twice a day as directed by a doctor. If you notice excessive drying on your skin then you should apply smaller amounts of the medicine or use it less often. It is best to consult your doctor for further details and instructions if any side effects are noticed. When working with the cleansers gently rub them into the skin for ten to twenty seconds as you work it to a full lather and then rinse thoroughly. If you have excessive, drying you can also raise the cleanser off sooner or use it less; however, as with the medicine, it is best to consult a doctor first before doing anything.
Side Effects of Benzoyl Peroxide
Some initial signs you should be aware of when using Benzoyl Peroxide include a slight stinging, dryness or peeling. If these conditions persist or worsen then you should notify your doctor. If you notice redness, irritation, scaly eruptions or a rash then you should contact your doctor immediately. If you notice, any other side effects not listed above when using Benzoyl Peroxide then you should talk with your doctor.
Precautions When Using Benzoyl Peroxide
It is best to notify your doctor if you are allergic to Benzoyl Peroxide or if you have any other allergies before using it. This medication is also known to bleach hair and colored fabric so you should use it cautiously to avoid contact. There is a possibility that you will become sensitive to the sun when using this product so you should avoid prolonged sun exposure, tanning booths or sunlamps. When you go outdoors, you should wear a sunscreen and wear protective clothing. You should also not use this medicine when you are pregnant and you should discuss the risks with your doctor since it can be excreted in the breast milk.
Drug Interactions
You should notify your doctor about all medicines you are taking, both prescription and nonprescription. If you are taking other skin medicines, you should notify your doctor before starting or stopping any of your medicines.
