What to Do for Acne Lesions?
July 27, 2008

There are three main things you can do to help your acne lesions. However, first it should be known that acne is caused by a complicated process that scientists and dermatologists still don’t completely understand. It is believed that an acne bacteria gets trapped inside a pore or hair follicle. The bacteria then feeds off the oil inside the pore and then multiplies which causes the infection. The inflammation is caused when the body tries to protect itself from the infection. The inflammation is seen as a large, red inflamed spot on the skin. Acne is also very difficult to treat so it can take awhile for any treatment to work. In addition, many treatments may not work for certain people so you should try individuals treatments for awhile until you find the right one that work for your skin.

Three Goals to Accomplish

The three things you can do to help your acne lesions is to kill the bacteria, reduce the oil on your skin and stop the pore from getting clogged. If you can kill off the bacteria then there will be no infection to cause the acne breakouts. Reducing the amount of oil in your pores will starve the bacteria which results in less acne breakouts. By reducing the amount of dead skin cells that can clog a pore you can reduce the amount of acne spots.

Step One: Cleaning Your Skin

The first step is to wash your skin. This method accomplishes two of the above goals. Washing your skin helps remove excess oils from your skins surface while at the same time killing the bacteria found on your skin. To get the best results you should use a gentle, non-comedogenic, non-irritating antibacterial cleanser. It can be very hard to find this type of cleanser. Today there is only one really good cleanser on the market which is Noxzema “Triple Clean” Cleanser. This is a mild cleanser that has an antibacterial called triclosan.

When you clean your skin you should first splash it once or twice with warm water. Then put about a dime of cleanser on your hand and work it into a rich lather. Apply the lather to your face and be as gentle as possible. If you scrub or rub your skin then you will only make your acne lesions worse. Apply the cleanser for one minute using your finger tips. This helps to kill off all the bacteria on your skin. Then rinse the cleanser off your face and gently pat dry with a clean towel.

Step Two: Benzoyl Peroxide

The second step is to use the very common over-the-counter acne lesion treatment. Benzoyl peroxide helps to create an oxygen rich environment that interrupts the metabolic process of the bacteria that causes acne which results in the death of the bacteria. In addition, benzoyl peroxide is an anti-inflammatory medicine which helps reduce the redness of acne lesions.

Do not use ten percent benzoyl peroxide unless you plan on clearing it off your skin right away. It is best to use benzoyl peroxide as five percent or less with two and half percent being the best solution to use. After your perform your face cleansing gently apply a benzoyl peroxide product to your skin.

Step Three: Salicylic Acid

Salicyclic acid works as an exfoliant which helps to get rid of your dead skin cells faster. This prevents your pores from becoming clogged which can lead to acne lesions. Once the benzoyl peroxide has dried you can gently apply the salicylic acid. You should use about a quarter sized amount on your face. However, if it is your first time using salicylic acid then you should use smaller amounts at first until your skin becomes used to it.

You should perform these three steps at least twice a day. Usually once in the morning and once before you go to bed. Always remember to use small amounts at first to let your skin get used to the products. Sometimes you may want to start with once a day and work up to twice a day. And always remember to wear sunscreen before going outside.
