Role of Stress and Lifestyle in Acne Prevention, Treatment July 4, 2009
While your lifestyle does not specifically cause your acne, lifestyle can still affect your skin. Where you work, the hours you keep and your recreation all have an effect on your skin and this is especially so in those with acne. The following are some everyday triggers that you may not realize can trigger acne and what you can do to avoid them.
Work
Some part of our skin is always in contact with the environment around us and we should look at the substances our skin meets on a regular basis. Without even knowing it, you may be exposing yourself to pore clogging substances on a daily basis while at work. They substances will not cause your acne, but if you already have problems with acne then these substances can make it worse. The worst is the airborne grease in a fast-food restaurant, which can cause an invisible film on your skin that will clog your pores. In addition, industrial oils found in cars, factories and bicycles would clog your pores.
Sleep
The best help you can give you skin is sleep. At least eight hours of sleep a night will help your skin as scientists have found through studies. A body that has the necessary amount of sleep has a good immune system. A good immune system won’t prevent acne completely, but it will help fight infections that will help clear up your acne lesions more quickly. However, your body isn’t particular as to when you sleep. Therefore, no matter what you schedule is you can find the best time for you to sleep and try to maintain a regular schedule.
Sun
It is true that small amounts of exposure to the sun will initially improve acne but the benefit is temporary. If you spend too much time exposed to the sun you skin will dry out which will cause your sebaceous glands to produce more oil and make your acne worse. In addition, skin exposed to the sun for long periods has to shed dead skin cells more frequently. The combination of extra oil and dead skin cells creates the ideal environment for clogged pores and acne. Therefore, if you work in the sun or are going to spend a lot of time in the sun is sure to protect your skin with a good sunscreen. It is best to find an oil-free sunscreen if possible to help prevent acne. At least an SPF 15 sun protection is needed to protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays.
Stress
Stress is the biggest factors in ongoing acne problems. Stress has a large impact on skin problems and is becoming a bigger problem every day. Stress can be caused by any number of emotional anxiety factors in your life. The connection between stress and acne is chemical. When you tense up because of stress your adrenal glands start to work and flood your bloodstream with the hormone cortisol. Cortisol then triggers the sweat glands in your face to produce more oil. As your sebaceous glands produce, more oil there is a higher possibility that the oil will mix with dead skin cells and clog your pores, trapping the unhealthy bacterium that causes acne inside. Therefore, stress results in more acne. Stress usually causes papules more so than blackheads or whiteheads.
How to Prevent Acne?
While you can’t eliminate stress from your life since it’s a part of being a human you can minimize the damage stress causes by leading a healthy lifestyle. A balance diet and at least seven hours of sleep every night will help improve your physical foundation. Being well fed and well rested will help you to be less irritated by the events you face every day. It is also important to get some exercise every day no matter how little it is. You should also take a little time out of every day to relax to help yourself become happy and calm.
