Severe Acne March 11, 2010
There are a lot of treatments available for acne problem and nearly all of them work on the similar basic principle. Commonly treatment of the major acne problems is done by reducing the oil glands, increasing the growth of new skin cells in order to replace the already existing dead skin cells and also combat the infection caused by bacteria. Your dermatologist is the best person to determine what kind of treatment is would suit you the most or would be most appropriate for your given condition. Generally, the severe acne starts to subside and it will be cured within a few weeks and symptoms become worse before they cure.
If your acne problem does not give any reaction to acne treatment with the usage of over-the-counter lotions, which mainly contains salicylic acid, resorcinol, lactic acid or sulfur and benzoyl peroxide, you should consult your doctor for further great form of treatment. There are some strong doctor suggested lotions like Tretinoin or adapalene, which usually contains synthetic Vitamin A, which is responsible for advancing the cell turnover and slow down the hair follicle from becoming blocked with a large amount of oil emissions. The topical antibiotics are useful to remove surplus skin bacteria and the best results are obtained when these are used in a combination.
In general, physician often prescribes oral antibiotics along with topical treatments. As severe or moderate acne is widespread, oral antibiotics are used for a long period of time in order to reduce bacteria and fight against the irritation and to reduce other acne problems. If antibiotics are misused or over managed they may lose their effectiveness and your body becomes opposed to these antibiotics. Overall, the acne treatment becomes useless because antibiotic is not removing the bacteria present in the body.
In case you have severe acne that does not seem to respond to any antibiotics or topical treatments then Isotretinoin may be the ultimate solution for severe stubborn acne or cystic acne. Isotretinoin is a very potent medication and it is generally used for extremely unusual cases. Sometimes it may cause some serious birth defects and it cannot be directed to pregnant ladies or women who become expectant while taking this treatment. With the use of this isotretinoin treatment liver enzyme levels can be increased in the body, cholesterol level in the blood will also increase and levels of triglycerides can be raised. After completion of this treatment all these irregularities are return to normal condition.
Various studies on these acne treatments have proved that oral contraceptives have enhanced acne conditions in many women, but before going to take this contraceptives women should discuss with their doctors about side effects with this treatment. Most women think that it is a win-win if they take oral contraceptives, one is use it for birth control and simultaneously use it treat acne, but on the ground situation is that the contraceptive used is of a very low dosage and therefore might not work like any regular birth control pill.
There are many cases where the acne has been left untreated in the severest of cases, the acne has left deep and unsightly scarring that would have required extensive cosmetic procedures that include Chemical peels, Dermabrasion, Laser resurfacing and intense light therapy and all other possible options. Highly experienced doctors should do these treatments as they have the potential to cause severe harm to the skin. The procedures are not recommended for patients with a tendency to for a scar tissue as it make the problem worse than earlier.
