There are multiple benefits of birth control pills which not only gives protection against pregnancy problems but also useful in curing some severe acne problems. Today's females, particularly young girls are using birth control pills in order to avoid acne problems and cure them. These pills have been proven to be effective for women who are more prone to pimples. In the year 1997 the FDA had approved low dosage birth control pills for the treatment of acne. As acne is a very common problem among the teenagers, birth control pills are one of the best methods of treating as well as getting protection from pregnancy. The prescription of birth control pills for acne depends entirely on the severity of acne perceived by the doctor, if he thinks that it is severe to warrant the birth control pills, and then he will prescribe the birth control pills along with different creams, lotions and antibiotics. As some the acne caused due to hormonal imbalances also, doctors prescribe these birth control pills to control and stabilize the fluctuating hormones.
As we all know the first of acne start during the adolescence, because it is the time when your hormones level begins to rise. The oil glands located at the base of each hair follicle produce excess sebum. This excess sebum combines with dead skin cells and dirt is trapped within the skin's pores thus forming the acne.
Birth control pills are suggested generally in cases of moderate to severe acne and in case the other medications do not cure the acne. Research studies have shown that the hormones present in the birth control pills prevent acne from forming. It has been noted that any birth control pill can be effective and there is brand distinction. So, the birth control pills can be used for the treatment of acne irrespective of the brand name. But the duration for the pills to work for the prevention of acne is longer and you have to have a lot of patience. Some times, it may take even several months for the birth control pills to show some result, but because of its low dosage these might not be as effective as an original birth control pill.
To take birth control pills for the prevention of pregnancy or the treatment of acne is a personal decision, which you have make. You should also be aware of the side effects of taking birth control pills like vaginal bleeding, fluid retention, melasma and depression. These pills also present some serious risks including heart attacks, strokes, blood clots and even breast cancer.
So, even though there may be some benefit by taking birth control pills for the acne but you have weigh your own decision depending on the pros and cons of taking such a pill. If you are thinking that it would work both ways, like stopping the pregnancy and be a potent drug for acne, then you might be mistaken because the pills is of very low dosage and may not actually work as an effective birth control pill.
