Pregnancy and Acne: Acne During Pregnancy and Medication September 2, 2010
During pregnancy acne is very common whether or not a person has had acne previously. The acne is most common during the first three months while the hormone levels are increasing. Progesterone causes the oil secretions from your skin glands to increase which causes acne breakouts. After the first trimester progesterone is produced by the placenta which then usually causes the acne to clear up.
Before Pregnancy
If you are planning a pregnancy then you should discuss acne treatments with your doctor before you become pregnant. Many of the acne treatments on the market today can cause serious problems for an unborn baby. Any medicine including tetracycline antibiotics, oral isotretinoin and topical retinoids can cause birth problems. Taking tetracycline tablets during pregnancy can damaged the bones and teeth of a developing fetus. Taking isotretinoin tablets will cause severe abnormalities and a similar effect can be caused by topical retinoids being absorbed into the bloodstream. Erythromycin is the only antibiotic acne treatment that is considered safe to take during pregnancy, but it isn’t as effective since many skin bacteria is resistant to it. However, it may be best to avoid all medications while pregnant.
During Pregnancy
While you are pregnant you may find your skin is dryer than normal. Therefore, for this reason acne drying treatments such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid may be too harsh on your skin. During pregnancy it is best to use acne treatments that are natural in origin.
Tea tree oil is one of the safest to use on acne spots and blemishes. Doing a daily facial wash or a peppermint facial wash is a mild way to keep your skin clear during pregnancy. If you are prone to blackheads or oily skin then you can consider a clay mask which is an excellent way to absorb the oils from your skin and open your blocked pores. The bentonite clay or the seaweed clay mask are the best options.
No matter what it is always best to remember to drink lots of water during your pregnancy. Along with this increase your diet of fruits and vegetables which will be beneficial not only for you and your skin but also for your unborn baby at the same time. If you can’t eat very well because of morning sickness then you can consider the option of a freshly made smoothie or soup to get your intake of fruit and vegetables.
When is it Safe to Use Certain Drugs
It is safe to take Accutane once you have discussed guidelines with your doctor. While taking Accutane you must use two forms of birth control at least one month before your start using Accutane and through one month after you stop taking Accutane. If you are breastfeeding a child you also should not take Accutane. The doctor will often discuss with you the ways your birth control can fail and it is often required that you have a negative pregnancy test at least one week prior to starting Accutane. For Retin-A acne treatments there has been no specific studies related to pregnancy so many doctors will follow the same guidelines as Accutane for Retin-A.
You should not take tetracyclines during pregnancy unless it is approved or recommended by your doctor. The American Academy of Pediatrics has approved women to take tetracycline during breastfeeding and declared it safe during this period.
Over-the-Counter Medicines
When pregnant it is even best to discuss over the counter acne cleansers and treatments with your doctor before use. Many of these products contain benzoyl peroxide as the main active ingredient that has been recommended as safe for pregnant women to use. However, there are some products that contain salicylic acid which should be avoided during pregnancy. Always consult a doctor before taking any medicines during pregnancy.
