Acne Myths and Misconceptions

There are many myths and misconceptions when it comes to acne. Many of these rumors are about what does and does not cause acne. Diet, hygiene and sex have always been common topics surrounding the condition of acne. However, there are many other myths about acne.

Acne Diet Myth

For a long time people believed that foods such as chocolate, French fries, potato chips and sugar among other greasy and sweet foods affected acne. However, recent studies cannot prove either way whether or not such food affect acne in any way. Most doctors now believe that people who suffer from acne should experiment with their diets and see if any foods affect the severity of their acne and then stay away from those foods. A recent study has come close to proving that milk consumption causes high acne rates because of the hormone levels in the milk. However, the study hasn’t been able to prove this for sure. Further research is needed to determine whether high-glycemic foods or refined sugars have any role in acne.

Hygiene

Contrary to popular belief, hygiene isn’t caused by deficient personal hygiene care or dirt. Most of these misconceptions probably come from the fact that acne involves skin infections. In reality, the blockage of the pores is caused deep within the narrow follicle channel where you can’t wash away the debris. The plugs are typically caused by cells and sebum that are naturally created in the body. The bacterium that is involved in causing acne is always present on a person’s skin. While good regular hygiene can help reduce acne, it cannot prevent acne. Hygiene is only going to reduce acne in some people and others will see little variation even with hygiene. In addition, anything more than a gentle cleansing will make the existing lesions worse and encourage new ones as a result of damages or over dry skin.

Sex

Other myths that surrounds acne is the fact that celibacy or masturbation causes acne and that sexual intercourse can cure it. However, there is no scientific or medical evidence that can prove these myths as facts. It is true however, that anger and stress can affect a persons hormone levels and as a result, the bodies oil production, which causes acne.

Acne from Stress

One of the less common myths is that acne is caused by stress. The regular stress that a person faces every day does not play an important role in the cause of acne. However, severe stress that requires medical attention and prescription drugs can have acne as a side effect of the drug being used to treat the stress. If you believe you, acne is caused by a drug you are taking then you should talk with your doctor and they can give you the best option on course of treatment for your acne.

Acne as a Cosmetic Disease

Another less common myth is that acne is caused by a cosmetic disease. This is true but only to a certain degree. Acne can affect the way people look and it doesn’t pose a serious health threat to a person, which can make it a cosmetic problem. However, this is not true because acne can produce physical scares and can affect person’s social lives by affecting the way they feel about themselves.

Treatment of Acne

One of the biggest myths surrounding the treatment of acne is that you should just let it run its course. This isn’t true because as many people know today, acne can be cleared up using treatments of various kinds. If you have tried several products and don’t see your skin clearing up then you can consult a dermatologist. There are so many products available today for the treatment of acne that a person should have to endure acne or suffer from the resulting scars of acne.
