Acne and the Human Skin September 2, 2010
Statistics show that Acne is among the most wide-spread of all diseases. Actually as many as eighty percent teens and about five percent adults suffer from Acne. What exactly is Acne? It is nothing but an inflammatory skin disease that affects the tiny pores covering the face, arms, back and chest and the oil glands attached to them. Though there are a lot of misconceptions around Acne, but the fact is that, Acne occurs from hormonal changes that are common during the teen years. Hormonal changes lead to the oil glands becoming overactive that finally lead to the black heads and the pimples. It is unfortunate that Acne hits just in those years when a person starts to become fashion and look conscious. Acne has the potential to ruin all that. It can crop up in the most beautiful of all faces and remain as scars forever that can damage the looks beyond repair, unless of course the person considers a costly surgery which is extremely rare.
Herpes & Acne
Herpes is another disease that can cause a bad scar on the face. Herpes and Acne are two such diseases. While the HSV-2 virus causes the eruptions to appear near the genital organs, the HSV-1 virus appears as a blister or cold sore near the mouth, lips and face. When the person is infected with the HSV-2 virus, it is referred to as genital sores. And when the infection is from the HSV-1 virus, it looks very close to Acne. Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease and thus it passes through personal contacts and even kissing. Much like Acne, herpes too itches and spreads quickly from one area to another. Another similarity between the two is that, it is difficult to fight down both these conditions.
Can I Shave when I have Acne?
Someone who have had Acne and needed a shave knows how horrific it can be. Do I shave? Or shouldn’t I? It is a classic dilemma? The eruptions can look deadly and it can bleed easily when you run the razor over it. So what do you do? Be careful – but go ahead. Actually, dermatologists have found that in some cases shaving actually physically exfoliates the skin. And what it does is that, it prevents the blackheads and whiteheads form forming. But do shave carefully. Never run the razor directly over the area, and always use warm water instead of cold water.
How do you know that you have Acne?
There is very little chance that you can have Acne before the teen years, or after them. So if you are not in that age bracket, then the chances are, you probably have something else. But then, there can be exceptions. In the beginning you are likely to have small and tender red spots – these will in a few days turn into pimples that may contain puss and look inflamed. Usually they disappear in a few days, but the problem is that, they irritate and thus most people end up scratching. This is a major problem because scratching leads to Acne scars. So if you have the red spots, make sure that you avoid oil, grease and other chemicals; shield the skin from excessive cold, heat and sunlight; avoid oily creams and foundations and wash the skin often with warm water.
